Discover how early support is helping kids connect, communicate and thrive.
Autism researchers at The Kids Research Institute Australia are global leaders in their field, pioneering new approaches to autism diagnosis and support that have had a tangible impact on the lives of autistic children and their families.
Our research goals are to transform how we provide support to the millions of autistic children around the world so that each and every autistic child can reach their full potential.
Key milestones in this area include helping to develop Australia’s first national guidelines for autism diagnosis and therapies, as well as regularly providing evidence-based advice to Government to support policy change.
Over the years, our researchers have shed new light on autism prevalence, and sparked a global conversation about the term ‘high functioning autism’. Our researchers have also developed an evidence-based program to support babies showing early differences in their communication and connection with others, which is being used across the world.
Our research discovered the rise in worldwide autism diagnoses is largely due to more children with milder behaviours being identified, rather than more children being born with autism.
We also called for the term ‘high functioning autism’ to be abandoned following our research which showed it was misleading and harmful to the autistic community.
